"A Man Nearer to God"

Posted by Matt in , ,

I think we all greatly loved President Hinckley. Most of us also consider him "Our Prophet", as we've grown up with him as prophet throughout much of our adult life. As I have pondered his life, I strongly feel that in our age, he is the closest man to God we've known. He was our best human standard of a God-like man, and his divine qualities were reflected his whole life. I highlight some of these amazing attributes:

1. Hard Working

"Forget yourself and go to work!" He surely did with tireless service to God, country, and the world, serving for something like 70 years and traveling 500,000 miles (I hope he logged his frequent flier miles -- yes in heaven).

2. Humble Humor

Always jesting about the effects of old age on him, he always showed a lighthearted side, I believe one his most important qualities. My personal favorite was when he knighted Elder Eyring.

3. Intelligent & Implementor

Through the inspiration Lord, he solved two of the greatest church issues of our day. First, he established smaller temples for Saints in remote areas, and Second he created and quickly implemented the wonderful perpetual education fund. Wait! Let's not also forget the hallmark proclamation on the Family.

4. Brave

A great Christian trait you ask? I think bravery is one of the greatest traits of all. The more Christian you become the less you want contention and anger, yet the Lord Himself and also requires us to occasionally correct people and give hard instruction. He did this in 1998 when he said only one earing. He has also done this in about the last ten conferences when he has covered topics such as forgiveness, pornography, church funds, etc.

5. Dedicated & Disciplined

Of all people I know, he truly put his entire life in the Lords hands and said, "Whatever it takes I will do your will." This faith, and discipline only comes from a heart that fully trusts and believes God.

So there you go. Please feel free to add the qualities you most admired about president Hinckley in the comments below. It truly is great to have a man so full of light and truth to have led us in these turbulent times.

Another thing I loved about President Hinckley was his stalwartness. His values, love, dedication, and faithfulness never changed. He was a rock in my life; someone I knew I could count on never to waiver. In part, it was this stalwartness of character that built my testimony in prophet's of God and provided an unvailing example of Christ.
